John DeMain held everything together with his sympathetic conducting, highlighting the riches in Gershwin's incomparable score. The numerous minor roles were expertly handled (Marjorie Wharton was a standout as the feisty Maria) and the chorus, a splendidly balanced, full-tone group, soared in the opera's poignant choral scenes.
